Auto generate text with snippets in Kate Text Editor

I love the Kate Text Editor.

Under configure Kate, then plugins check snippets.

You will see the snippets on your left side of the Kate editor.

There are three icons, left to right: New, Save, Delete.

Select New, and above a new highlighted selection will appear. Name the snippet.

For this example I named one HTML-Template.

Now in the box below add the text for the snippet. I included everything I need for a standard HTML.

Save file.

Now when I double-click the snippet the code from the bottom box will appear in editor.

I have many. Standard PHP file, CSS shortcuts, etc. Saves huge time.

Gmail Spam Filter.

For some reason, even using your Gmail address responsibly will result in loads of spam.

The good thing is that it never makes your inbox.

If you are like me, and you get tired of seeing the count next to your Spam folder, you can create a filter to automatically convert the spam to Read, or Delete.

In the filter under “has the words” put is:spam, and click Next.

You will get a message saying you shouldn’t do this, but go ahead anyway.

Then choose what you want to do.

If you say, Read, you won’t see the count. You can select Delete also, but it goes right to your Trash folder, which it stays for 30 days, or until you delete them. Same as if you leave them in the Spam folder.

Choice is yours.

No Audio (sound) in xfce xubuntu

SOLVED
For some reason, my audio went down after a software upgrade.

Under system settings, Multimedia, I noticed my Alsa was gone, but PulseAudio was there.

I came across the “Mixer” under “Multimedia”. This is in XFCE, not KDE or GNOME. I use XFCE

I selected PulseAudio, and the master volume was off. I maxed it out, and I now have audio.

Ubuntu 9.04
Windows manager XFCE

Gmail and Spam

I’ve had a gmail account for a while, now, and the spam is unreal.

First, I need to point out, that I never signup for newsletter or the like. This email address was and is used in a responsible manner.

However, either Google leaked my email, or someone hacked it, not sure.

I started using Filters to delete emails on arrival without going to Spam folder based on what is in my Spam folder.

Today is the end of one week of creating these filters, and they number 99 as of this morning, and there will probably be another 15-20 by the end of the day.

I think I might try again, and delete account. I spend more time cleaning up spam and trash folders than I care to.

NO WIRELESS WITH XFCE.

After changing from KDE to XFCE, I was no longer able to use my wireless card.

I used the Synaptic Package Manager to search for WICD.

When found, I selected to install, and it removed the KDE wireless connections because they don’t work well together. Even if you change from Gnome to KDE, what is used in Gnome has to be removed, and vise versa.

After installation, I restarted, and my wireless is up and running..

Ubuntu Sessions– Gnome, KDE, and XFCE with Dell Laptop

I have the latest Ubuntu ( as of this writing ) installed on a stock Dell Inspiron b120.

I started with Gnome, and I was having memory issues, such as frequent lockups.

I tried KDE, and I really liked it, but I was still having the same issues. Just one program such as mozilla, or opera open would cause a lockup.

I logged out, and logged in under XFCE, and it works way faster. If I have any issues, I’ll update it here.

Hopefully this will work out because I need a few things open. I usually need the web browser, Kate, and Gimp open because I develop web apps.

Here are some properties of css boxes.

Margin

Margin is the space between the border of the element and other elements.

Border

Border is a rule that surrounds the element. Usually it is set to 0, but it can be styled to dash, solid, dotted, etc.

Padding

Padding is the space between the border and the content.

Width and Height

Width and Height are the dimensions of the content area.

CSS Color and Background Properties

We can give a background color to many things.

We just use the “background-color: somecolor “, and apply it to any class we want.

Just to name a few: [ body, h1, h2, img, and any custom named classes ]

body           {
                   background-color: #fff;
                  }

h1              {
                   background-color: #000000;
                  }

etc...

We can also apply background to Form elements also.

input.formText {
                      background-color: #fcc;
                      color: red;
                      }

input.formButton {
                         background-color: #fcc;
                         color: red;
                         }

Then apply in the HTML code.

This gives the input box a background and a color text.

This gives the form button a background and a text color.
